Join Cadenza: Questions
How much does it cost?
Cadenza works on the basis of three terms in the year. The current subscription rate is £45 per term for full members, with a reduced rate of £28 per term for students and the unwaged.
Who decides whether I can become a member?
The Conductor auditions all potential members, and the decision is hers. If you are unsuccessful, it is not necessarily because you did not sing well on the night or had problems with the sight reading. It could simply be that she feels your voice will not blend well with the existing choir. Please do not be offended or downhearted if this should turn out to be the case.
What should I wear?
For concerts, the choir dress is as follows:
Men : Fringe concert: dinner suit, white shirt (no wing collar), black bow tie. A coloured handkerchief will be supplied at each concert for your pocket - for decoration only, not to be used! Christmas and charity concerts: black shirt and black trousers, self-coloured tie (this will be supplied for all concerts except Christmas, when you are encouraged to wear a tie in any colour, preferably bright and cheerful).
Women : All concerts: black trousers, plain black top (i.e. self coloured, no sparkles or shiny material). The top can be any style in which you feel comfortable, but should have long sleeves and come reasonably high up to the neck (sorry, no plunging cleavages!). Coloured scarves will be supplied at each concert.
When do rehearsals take place?
The choir rehearses each Wednesday evening between 7.30 and 9.45 pm. Please note rehearsals may run on after this time. Rehearsals start promptly at 7.30, and there is a 5 minute break at the mid point (approximately!).
How soon will I be allowed to sing in a concert?
Singing in any concert is at the discretion of the Conductor. She will let you know if she does not feel you have had enough time to learn the repertoire for a concert.
What happens if I am unable to come to a rehearsal?
We keep a record of all attendance. If you are unable to come to a rehearsal, you should contact your Section Representative, or if they are unavailable, any office-bearer. If you know some time ahead that you will be unable to attend a particular rehearsal, you should also tell the conductor, as she may adjust the rehearsal schedule if several members of a particular section are to be away on any one night.
Are there any social activities?
Oh yes! Various events are organised throughout the year and have in the past included ceilidhs, walks followed by a pub lunch, beetle drives, quiz nights - anything which will appeal to the membership (suggestions always welcome!). There are also post-concert gatherings in a local hostelry, and an informal gathering after each rehearsal. The after-rehearsal venue changes periodically, but at the moment it is the Meadows Bar in Buccleuch Street.
Who supplies the music?
Cadenza supplies all the music you will need. This is paid for from the annual subscriptions.
